But to really identify and be completely sure, if any two supplements that offer B12 are compatible, it comes down to two aspects – Prime Daily Values (PDVs) and Upper Tolerable Intake Levels (ULs).

PDVs aims to identify the actual amounts of various vitamins and other nutritional substances to be taken daily to achieve optimal (the best possible) health.

ULs, on the other hand, aims to identify the maximum daily intake of various vitamins and other nutritional substances that can be taken long-term (life long) without any adverse effects – only the positive ones.

Thus, the combined amounts of B12 in various supplements preferably should be within the range or about the amounts that are defined by PDVs. However, whenever the combined amounts exceed them, you should make sure that they do not exceed the ULs.

The takeaway message in this is that prefer PDVs, but do not exceed ULs. Because if you do, long-term use of such amounts is likely to cause adverse effects, which then undermines the whole purpose of improving your health to the maximum with supplements.

So, the combined amounts would be 800 micrograms of B12, which is within the range of PDVs. And this is the amount that’s perfectly good to intake daily.

Example #3 Of Using B12 Supplement

Let’s look at yet another quick example.

Example #3 B12 Supplement Interactions With Other SupplementsLet’s say you’re using a multivitamin supplement daily that offers 500 micrograms of vitamin B12. And on top of that you’d like to add one of the supplements on the list of 26 best vitamin B12 supplements 2019.

However, as your multivitamin supplement already contains 500 micrograms of B12 and that is within the range of PDVs, you don’t really need to add another B12 supplement.

This, nonetheless, is entirely your choice as you might find or feel that adding some more B12 does positively influence your well-being.

There are two ways how the B12 does things when it lands in our organisms, so to say. One – it fulfills and carries out functions that only the B12 can activate within our bodies to be carried out. And two (and this accounts for most cases) – it interacts with other vitamins, minerals, and other substances to carry out and fulfill various functions in the body.

So, in the first case, it’s completely fine to take a singular B12 supplement.

Everything In Our Bodies Works In ConjunctionBut as regards to the second instance only using a B12 supplement will not be enough. Because you might intake all of the needed B12, but lacking other certain vitamins, minerals and other substances will make this available amount of B12 useless.

Again – because the B12 can’t replace any of the other nutritional substances. And thus, as it can’t be used because of the lack of for example vitamin B6 or B9, it ultimately just gets excreted.

So, to get the most out of any B12 supplement, you should also for the very least use a multivitamin supplement daily.

    I have been used to the MegaFood Methyl B12 but I think its time to give the Thorne Research Methylcobalamin a try. 

    Also, I support the stand that to take vitamin B12 in order to avoid sickness and illness is completely different from taking vitamin B12 to achieve peak performance.

    Interesting read Matiss. I currently take a multi-vitamin Woman’s Supplement as well as Magnesium (recommended because I have headaches a lot). Just wondering if additional B12 is recommended or even necessary with what I am currently taking. I think I’ll have to go look at the quantities in my current supplement and try to work it out.

    I had a look through your recommendations and you have been so super thorough I think the Megafood option is what I will go with. I love the idea that they work with the farmers and am happy to buy their product and support that.

    This is the absolute most exhaustive list of B12 supplements that I have ever read!

    I’ve had bariatric surgery and getting better than a simply useful amount of any vitamin can be difficult. I also had no idea that there were so many forms of B12! I would have to choose the bioavailable forms, as you recommend because my digestive and absorption rates have been compromised.

    I saw a couple of items in your top 20 list that my surgical team also have on their recommended list, so I will be looking at those more closely now.

    By the way I wanted to let you know that I found the section describing how the different types of B12 work the most awesome. I enjoy the science of the human body and learning that we actually create a cyanide molecule while converting B12 to become useful… It blows my mind!

    Your site looks nice and I think you are passionate enough about these products.You have a very good description of the products and believe me, I am very pettifogging.

    I liked it very much: your detailed explanation, the simple fact that you have a conclusion and a top 3.

    Now, now these are good stuff, but how can we improve it?

    1) Because the article: “Do we need multivitamins?” does not have a clear conclusion, I would add to the site also the foods that are a source for each vitamin.If you leave the decision to be taken by the client, which is ok, then give him some other alternatives.

    For example, in the post “26 Best Vitamin B12 Supplements 2018” at the end, you can say something like, if someone does not want supplements and has a certain related health problem, because of the lack of b12, then one can increase the consumption of eggs and milk products. (Vegetarians can do that!). Make a list of foods for each article and every vitamin.

    That will build trust between you and your audience and they can find the answer elsewhere in the net, anyway.

    2) Maybe you have to make a short video on the site, while you are explaining one of the articles. People will feel they know you! You are the kind of guy who knows what you are talking about and it should be easy for you.

    That’s basically all. It was just a humble opinion. I do not have a website yet, I just send my point of view as a visitor (and a vegetarian, too!).

    Hi Matiss,

    What an exhaustive examination of B12 supplements and the various options.  It is actually a lot to digest.  I am not much for taking supplements, but I do take a hi potency (it says on the label) B Complex pill every day.  A few years back I had a bout with sciatica and my doctor in the Philippines prescribed it.  I continue to take it even though his prescription of it ran out after a few weeks.  I don’t want to go through the sciatica like I had it then ever again.  I note on the label that the B12 included is cyanocobalamin, the synthetic version, at 50 mcg per dose. Based on your information, I ought to bulk that up to 500-1000 mcg/day, correct?

    What are the best sources of B12 in foods and how easy is it to get the therapeutic dose “naturally” without supplements?

      The best sources for B12 are various aminal kingdom products. One of the absolute best ones – clams, sardines, beef, and liver.
      In the modern environment, it’s pretty impossible. Surely, you can try and do the vitamin as much as naturally possible. But the overall intake on any typical day won’t account for that much.

    My parents always emphasized to me how incredibly important the vitamin B12 is for everyone. They always told me and made me to take a capsule of a supplement once per day. It’s been about time I’d replace the supplement I have been using as I’m not entirely sure it’s that great in terms of what else is out there.

    I have been having problems with fatigue for several months and realize I might need to make some adjustments.  I am trying to eat better and cutting out the fast food.

    I am going to be purchasing some Vitamin B12 supplements in a week or so.  I know a lot of the brands that you have mentioned.  However, I keep seeing the brand “NOW Foods”.  Their B12 supplements are much cheaper than the ones you mentioned.  Do you believe they are a good option too?

    I know cheaper doesn’t always mean better so I figured I would ask.

      I hope you’re doing great. Generally, I do agree NOW Foods is an awesome brand. As you said their supplements tend to be cheaper than the competition.

      However, in regards to the B12 (NOW Foods Methyl B12), it is no good. I would highly advise to not go for it.
      The most troublesome aspect about that supplement is that it has Fructose as one of its additives. Fructose essentially is that same High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in terms of the health implications it poses.

      Thus, any of the supplements on this list will be a much better option than the NOW Foods attempt on B12.

      I hope that helps you in making a more informed decision.

      I checked out the Z&M brand. As far as I can tell, it’s not a brand I would advise going for. They do claim to provide as natural of supplements as possible, however at the same time they use nutrient forms like Cyanocobalamin, Choline bitartrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Retinyl Acetate and Thiamine mononitrate in their supplements. On top of that the supplements they’re providing seem to be average at best.

      No third party assertions as of their quality. So, that remains largely a mystery. Overall I would say to avoid them for the time being. Or at least until they acquire proper assertions and certifications. If ever.

      Absolutely no problem, I enjoyed putting this together for all of you.

    I have been searching google for the best vitamin b12 supplements when I found your site. I appreciate how you broke everything down to a science but honestly I am looking for b12 because I am a depressed single mother and taking b12 drops I have found relieves some of my depression symptoms as well as my fatigue. Its quite remarkable and effective. I require a good about of b12 each day to remain functioning and happy.

    I am aware of the additives in supplements. That is why I usually go for FOOD based supplements. I am very family with MEGA FOOD brand and usually purchase that brand of Vitamin B12. But you know what? After reviewing this article I feel like the Garden of Life Vitamin Code RAW Iron is something suitable for me because I am a menstruating woman with low iron. I feel like this product will make me feel physically better. 

    I am just very sensitive when I don’t have my supplements and when I lack in certain nutrients I just feel blah. I appreciate that you really took the time to research and find the absolute best products on the market in regards to vitamin b12.

    That is an enormous amount of information to absorb! And VERY educational! B12 is a very important vitamin that most people do not get enough of!

    I work in a restaurant where I have access to a lot of the fresh and organic fruits and veggies listed in some of your recipes, I am one of the lucky ones that gets their B12 without even realizing it.

    Thank you for this extensive review on the best Vitamin B12 Supplements.

    I agree with you that the values given by the DV and NRV are far too low because you will start showing symptoms already. When I visited my anti-aging doc recently he said I was too low so I got a shot of Vitamin B12.

    I have started to take what manufacturers say with a grain of salt. In our world, it seems they speak with their benefit in mind, not our health.

    If our digestive systems do not function properly the whole body gets out of balance. This is caused by the junk food and processed foods we normally eat. One should not eat something of which one cannot pronounce the words on the label.

    Organic is the best option and in the case, we still need some extra Vitamin B12 your good list comes in very handy.

    I use B12 but after reading your extremely thorough reviews here I think I  will try the Thorne Research B Complex #12. I need other B vitamins besides B12 so I  think that would be the best choice for me. I know I need B2 for my eyes and some of the other B’s as well. 

    I may try the Live Wise Naturals B12 liquid as well. It is interesting you mentioned the warning that men should not take supplements with iron. My husband has excessive iron and has been told the only way to get rid of it would be to donate blood! That sounds so archaic as the old practices of bloodletting but I  guess some people just accumulate too much iron in the blood. It is due to a genetic variation found in some Scandinavian/Viking populations.

      Yes, indeed, all B vitamins, in general, are extremely beneficial and therefore needed for great health. The B12 alone is no warrior.
      In this regard, I do believe that the best approach, however, would be to primarily go for a multivitamin and then to add to that either a solid singular B12 supplement or that Thorne Research B Complex #12. This is because, essentially all of the vitamins and minerals play a unique role in our well-being and health and best results will always be achieved through a thorough and comprehensive nutrition, rather than selective.

      To be honest, getting rid of the excess iron through donating blood is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to get that under control. Donating blood essentially does two things.

      First, it activates the organism’s natural response of renewing the blood amount within the organism. In this process, a lot of the iron reserves are utilized.
      And second, you’re actually helping other people, because there quite literally can be a person, who survives a surgery, a blood infection or a different kind of condition just because of the blood donated.

      Therefore, although, I do agree that it might sound archaic, it is the most practical solution.

    Waow! This is a great eye opener for me, as I have never really taken into pespective the importance of Vitamin B-12 before, when I go for supplements I just look for one with the daily intake of omega 3, but after reading this, & especially finding out how important Vitamin B-12 is to our body, I now know what to focus on.  

    But if I may ask, is taking this Vitamin B-12 Supplement enough on it’s own, or do I still need to take other supplements alongside it?

      Vitamin B12 certainly is important but it isn’t everything. Omega-3s are extremely important, so are also proper multivitamins.
      In that sense, vitamin B12 supplements are best to complement multivitamins and omega-3s. Therefore, if you are not going for the full range of nutrients required for optimal health, it will be much more beneficial to primarily go with the two mentioned, and only then if you choose to add that B12.

    Oh, yes, wow it is true I think that our body is made or created of 90% micrograms in the brain 10% of human flesh. It is basically, of course, to fight all different bacteria’s our individual body possesses. So, yes, it is up to one another how to look after our bodies for health reasons, and deep down it refers to moderately put or eat what types of vitamins and calories in our individual systems.

    “Quality and manufacturing practices used in supplement production is something that mostly isn’t put on the supplement label. However, they’re extremely important.” – As you said, nutrients I surely agree with you are critical.

      I’m not sure what are you referring to when you mentioned 90% micrograms in the brain and 10% micrograms in the human flesh. As for the second sentence, I’m at a complete loss as well. Do keep in mind that our gut is composed of the microbiome, which essentially is various types and different kinds of micro-organisms, bacteria if you will.

      Our health definitely is though quite reliant on what we eat. “You are what you eat.” In that regard, however, supplements are something to complement your diet with and not something to completely rely on, when it comes to one’s health. Overall great health is an entirety of many factors, food and proper nutrition just being some of them.

      You are welcome to clarify the parts I did not manage to understand!

    Hello Matiss, What a lot of work you have gone through to do this informative review on the use of Vitamin B12 supplementation. It was good to see that you had not forgotten about the vegan population.

    Presently have a problem in the gut so am being treated by a specialist and will be seeing him again on 28th of this month. I will inquire about the possible use of Vitamin B12 and when and if he thinks I should use it.

    Was advised by a friend who went through much of what I am going through with the stress of a mentally ill husband, to have Vitamin B12 injections but need to speak to my specialist first.

    Of all the wonderful products you have mentioned in this article, the only one I have come across, here in  South Africa, is the Vital range.

    We are obviously sadly lacking in choice or the others we have are not available in the USA.

    Am an advocate of eating fresh, preferably organic, fruit and vegetables.

    Wow, you have provided a ton of great information. We should have no problem figuring out which B12 supplement to use for our own situation. This information is very detailed and I like the fact you put side effects in here.

    Is it really true that we can’t get enough B12 from the foods we eat? I know from my own research for my website that we can get B12 from fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. But, I guess that would not help if you are vegan or vegetarian.

    Do you think B12 as a supplement is better in capsule, pill or liquid form?

      I love your question and thank you for asking it.
      I’m of the opinion, which is also founded in research and various studies, that we can’t really get enough nutrients from the food only to ensure optimal health.

      Well, that is exactly the thing. Enough for what? If the answer is to be okay or to not get a deficiency disease, then certainly, yes! We absolutely can get all of the B12 we need from the food alone.

      But if the answer is to be great, to be unstoppable, to ensure that our bodies and minds can perform at their best, to have the optimal, best health possible – then, no. I really can’t explain it any better than I’ve already had in the article of do we need vitamin supplements. So, if you’re interested please check it out! 🙂

      As for the supplement form, I do believe that it does not matter that much to specifically choose one over another. In my opinion, it’s best to go with the one you are okay with consuming daily and that doesn’t make you tread the idea of taking the supplement. In that regard, it really is much more beneficial than the insignificant and theoretical advantages of one form over the other.

    Now, this is a great list of vitamin B12 supplements. The list of 20 different products is a bit overwhelming though, I in a sense miss a short description of each product. For me personally as a consumer without too much knowledge about the topic it is not easy to choose one of your recommendations. 

    Maybe you can recommend a better product, for a male, over 50 years, I don’t like chemicals, I prefer BIO. Thanks.

      Well, I do see where you’re coming from but this is the downside of creating thorough guides. And that was my goal – to create a thorough guide.

      The goal wasn’t to make a handout on the best vitamin B12 supplements. In fact, even shorter descriptions for the supplements I don’t feel would do them justice. I made them as short as they can possibly be. If you’re not into actually reading the descriptions, you don’t have to, it’s not like I’m forcing you. 🙂 You can always just base your choice on the titles given in the article.

      As for not being easy to choose, well it won’t ever be, there is just too much great stuff out there. I have tried to ease this though by putting them all in a list. So, if it still is hard to choose, don’t overthink it. It’s not like you’re choosing a supplement you have to now buy for the rest of your life. If you like multiple ones, just try them all consequently and see which one works best for you. Then stick with that one.

      For all you organic die-hards out there – Vegansafe B-12 is your best bet.

    Wow, what a great article! I really enjoyed the reading! My daughter is vegan, and I think she will need vitamin B12, but first I want to go with her to do a blood test so we can see if she lack vitamins. I think she does though. Anyway, I will check for the vegan vitamin B12 through the link on your website. Is it OK to take one vitamin per day? Or it would be better two or three times a week?

      Yes, it is perfectly fine to take one a day for adults. For children, it really depends on their age. So, in essence, they do not need as much so for them taking one a day might be an overkill.
      If you can provide me with the approximate age of your daughter, I’ll look into it. Other than that, it really is a wild guess. If she’s in her teens, for the time being, you could try to go with 500 micrograms providing B12 supplement 3-4 times a week. It might also be that it could work if you were to provide her with such a supplement daily. But I haven’t done my research in regards to this yet.

      Either way, to make this easier for you and others, I will be making an article in regards to this in the future.

    Wow, loads of valuable information. Just recently I came to know and realized by just consuming food alone we cannot gain the required vitamins or amount of vitamins to our body needs. And we need to go for the vitamin supplements.

    At the present situation looking at our foods its almost impossible to consume the required vitamins and  vitamin supplements is a must to everyone.

    I can see the effort and time you invested for this great article and for sure many going to benefit from it.

    May I ask…

    Is that we need to take a lot of tablets… That is… For vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Protein etc So is that we need to take a lot of tablets. Is their a way to take just few tablet which will cover all the required vitamins. Please advice.

      I can only agree with that. Through some genuinely in-depth research, I’ve also found this to be the case.

      The best approach in regards to taking vitamins, minerals and just nutrients in general that are needed for our best health is through proper multivitamin supplements. And then if the particular multivitamin one decides on does not provide in sufficient enough amounts or form a specific nutrient, it’s best then to add that through a single nutrient supplement.

      The vitamin B12 deficiency itself is correlated with weakness, fatigue, nerve damage, glossitis, mouth ulcers, disturbed vision, mood changes and disorders, brain disorders, breathlessness, and dizziness, as well as with pale and jaundiced skin and other symptoms. Thus, that tiredness and lethargicness can be correlated with the amounts of B12 you’re having. Or if I say so myself – not having.

      However, do take in mind that there are a bunch of nutrients, which are responsible for appropriate energy levels. Take for example vitamin D. One of its core functions is related to energy metabolism. So, in essence, to start with you should best consider going with a proper multivitamin if you’re not taking one already. And then consider also adding a B12, if the multivitamin you decide on does not provide B12 in amounts of 500-1000 micrograms.

      Other than that, it can also be related to various lifestyle factors such as not exercising regularly.

      I do agree that it can get a little bit hard to choose, if you’re overthinking it. But try to keep it simple. There is no right or wrong answer when considering the choosing of a supplement from the top of the list. I did list them in order starting with the best.
      In that sense the No. 1 is a full on vitamin B12 without any additions, but the following do have some angles on them. Choose whichever gets you most excited or that rings most true to you.

    Such a great post. As an RN, I appreciate your website a lot – “Better eat vitamin supplements for prevention than to eat a handful of medicines for cure”. 

    B12 is truly important. And I must thank you for this post to create awareness of its importance – Anybody sometimes can  forget or maybe not aware of the symptoms – And yes, even those who work as healthcare provider. 

    I had a colleague for long years ago, she suffered a severe B-12 deficiency and the neurological and psychological symptoms are unimaginable. Luckily she got cured with it after a long hospital admission.

      The vitamin B12 deficiency – yes, it’s certainly very far from where you want to be.

      I had an acquaintance, who was lactating while being vitamin B12 deficient. And not only did it have massive negative impact on herself, but also on the child. Just devastating to a point where the child was having mental breakdowns and becoming randomly temporarily unresponsive to the outside world.

      Eventually they got sorted it out, but it certainly isn’t fun being B12 deficient. I do believe that it’s one of the most important of all the various vitamins out there.

    I didn’t know there were so many different brands out there. I’m just always into buying whatever’s in the special offer in the supermarket. I have Swisse B12, and I take one every second day. Don’t really feel any difference. After reading your last bit of the article, I think I should start eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and cut off junk food… I didn’t want to take B12 everyday, there is also the fish oil, vitamin D, calcium, iron, vitamin C that I take! What are your thoughts, should I also take B12 daily with those supplements? Can I? Since I read that you mentioned there is no side effects found in taking B12.

      Definitely try going easier on the consumption of junk food. Don’t cut it off right away though as that is proven to essentially work for only 2 or so weeks while you’re inspired to live healthy. After that period most people revert back. Again, if it’s cut off instantly. I believe that the best approach is to gradually decrease the amounts of junk food you’re having and replacing it with fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and all the other healthy stuff.

      Yes, you can definitely add the B12 to the supplements you’re already using! It will only be to your benefit.

      However, I would also propose you to consider a proper multivitamin. It will add the much needed other crucial nutrients that you’re current regimen is lacking. On top of that the multivitamin would possibly replace some of the supplements you’re currently using (depending on which one you choose), but would add way more value.

    Hi Matiss. Me, again! Thanks for yet another comprehensive review. During that recent checkup I’ve mentioned before already, my Doctor told that I should probably increase my overall vitamin intake, which needless to say also includes the B12. The multi-vitamin I’ve started appears to provide very little B12.

    As probably you remember already, I have always tended to avoid supplements as I wanted to get all the vitamins via diet but I am realizing now that if I find the right ones then it makes things so much easier than having to consume 10000 spinach leaves. Thanks again for your work in providing this information and for assisting me in making a good decision. I appreciate it!

    I remember that my mom gave me B-Complex when I was younger and I feel the energy from it. This is a very good article because you provide details and crucial information about different sources of vitamin B12. The article itself reminded me of my years taking those vitamins that my parents used to buy. Now, I’m entering my 30s and I feel the need for some extra vitamins. I used to an athlete and now barely do any physical activity, I try to run with my teams when I coach soccer. I’m trying to stay as healthy as possible you know 🙂

    Many people underestimate the importance of Vitamin B12, and also that you need to take the very least amounts of DV, which I think many people don’t reach.

    I’m in the fitness and bodybuilding world for quite a time now, the people there know the advantages and they take supplements, but outside of it, not too many know.

    So really thanks for sharing it, so people can understand and also know which supplement is the best of price/quality!

      DV really are the absolute minimum you should get daily. The ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. I would, however, strongly recommend to stick to PDV in regards to the B12. It will be much more beneficial both short-term and long-term.
      Other than that, I also do believe that many people in their daily lives don’t reach the DV, statistics also show that. Which are very concerning.

      I will do my best to change that! To help as many people as I can.

    That is a very comprehensive overview. Two things are very nice to see. First, the breakdown of cost per day. That is helpful for those who take multiple supplements per day. The cost can really add up! The second thing is the inclusion of vegetarian and vegan sources. We have several vegan friends and they have typically had difficulty getting this level of detail. Oh, almost forgot – I really appreciated the section on interactions with other supplements. That is a topic that is usually given little attention.

    Hello Matiss. Thanks for this great in-depth information. To be honest, I did not realize B12 was that important. As a woman you often hear that it is important to take Calcium (for our bones) and Vitamin D. Out of your list the one that caught my attention was the No. 3 | Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw B-12, mainly because it is gluten free. I am not gluten intolerant but have found that when I eliminate gluten from foods in general I feel so much better. Secondly, I like No. 2 | MegaFood Methyl B12 because in addition to all the other benefits, it contains Beet Root which I know is very good for you.

    Is there an age factor here to consider? I mean a 20 year old vs a 60-70 year old taking B12 and the benefits, particularly for the older woman?

      We’re very similar in that sense, I also feel much better when I’m avoiding gluten in my diet. In that regard both the Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw B-12 and MegaFood Methyl B12 are gluten free.

      In regards to the age factor, I don’t think it plays a large enough role to consider it what concerns the vitamin B12 amounts. Nonetheless, I feel that the Beet Root would be something too valuable to pass for an older woman.

    The vitamin B group is a one of three supplements I take daily, and I try to buy a brand that is well known for it’s quality. My mother however, goes for the cheaper brands, and I often wonder why they are so cheap?

    Is it down to the delivery of the tablet supplement? Do they put something in them that is cheaper than the more popular brands? More often than not both examples contain the exact same amount of vitamin/mineral/etc…

      If we’re talking about supplements in general there are essentially three aspects that are the most common in regards to the differences in price.

      First, the vitamin forms. For example, a cheap version of the supplement will state that it has 400 mili-grams of Magnesium and a quality supplement will state that it has 400 mili-grams of Magnesium. The only difference will be that in the first instance it will be in a form of Magnesium Oxide and in the second instance it will be Magnesium Orotate.
      These various forms, however, will be a huge difference upon consumption of the supplement. Meaning our bodies generally struggle to absorb (acquire) Magnesium from Magnesium Oxide, but can absorb (acquire) easily Magnesium from Magnesium Orotate. So, the latter will be many times more beneficial than the former.

      Second, additives used. The active forms of the nutrients might be the same, but there might be a huge difference in the quality of additives, in that how harmful they are, how likely are they to induce side-effects, the actual substances that those are derived from and so on.

      Third, manufacturing practices. One manufacturer putting all it’s best efforts into making the supplement as pure and beneficial as possible, and the other doing some superficial tests to remove most common contaminants, but not really interested in making the supplement as pure as possible.

      Surely, supplements can also simply be overpriced. Usually it’s not the case though. But that may occur.

    That is certainly a lot of information about B12 vitamins, a very comprehensive guide. I would not have thought to look for additives in the supplement, or the quality and manufacturing practices. Thank you for your honesty and I’m glad you shared this.

    I am totally of the opinion that it is extremely difficult, next to impossible to get all of your daily vitamin requirements through food alone. Furthermore the statistics of vitamin deficiencies are just insane (in a bad way). Therefore it makes me really glad there is someone such as yourself Matiss who is looking out for people and making sure that we don’t fall into the traps of marketing.

    Hi, this is a very complete feeling of a guide to B-12 supplements. The quality of each one really seems top notch. I do think that if more people knew about the health benefits of this supplement they would make more effort to incorporate it into their diet, and if more people knew about the quality stuff, we’d have less of the low quality supplements out there. I’ll help to spread the message.
    Two questions I have – are there B-12 supplements that could be harmful if taken in too higher quantities? Do any of the vitamin supplements possible to cause an allergic reaction? Thanks.

      Sure, vitamin B12 supplements supposedly can be harmful if taken into amounts larger than 5000 micro-grams. That is essentially what’s presumed, but none know for sure yet. Either way, I would never recommend to use a supplement that exceeds that dose.

      As for allergic reactions – to the B12 vitamin itself – no. However, various additives that any particular supplement has may cause allergic reactions to some people. In regards to the supplements on this list, it’s extremely unlikely, yet the potential possibility of such occurrence still can’t be completely ruled out.

      So, if for some reason a supplement of your first choice seem to bring up an allergic reaction, try a different one. 🙂

    I have paid as little as $2 for a tub of Vitamin B12 supplements before and you really do get what you pay for. I strongly advise anyone that is looking to add the B12 to their daily routine to pay the extra and get a quality supplement.

    I have learned so much about various products that contain the vitamin B12 so I will be taking on your advice and paying for quality rather than get them because they are cheap. You might as well not take them at all if you want to buy the cheap and nasty stuff.

    Do you really have to be getting between 500 – 1000 micrograms of B12 daily? I need to up my dose then as at the moment my supplements only contain 350 micrograms per tablet.

      I couldn’t agree with you more. It really is much better to not go with cheap supplements as many of those contain additives that have the potential to actually worsen your health.
      I feel that the 500 – 1000 micrograms a day is the best approach. However, 350 micrograms certainly does work as well.

    This is an exceptionally detailed post about Vitamin B12 supplements, and the pros and cons of each are so helpful. I have always been a believer in vitamins, but haven’t done my research as diligently as I should. 

    I have been taken in by the mass advertising, and have always depended on a good quality multi-vitamin as the cure all for whatever might be wrong.

    I am anxious to use the information you have provided to determine what supplements my body may actually need, and since I’m now in my 60’s I know my needs are probably different now than they were 20 years ago.

    Great article on B12. Did not realise just how powerful and perhaps needed the vitamin is, always presumed whats in those daily supplements is enough, clearly not, plus the examples are a good addition to know how much you could take. Really good choice of suppliers too, may have a closer look at them and think about getting a few to test them out.

    I’m not a big fan of multivitamins or vitamins in general for that matter. 🙂 I prefer healthy food more and I prefer to take the vitamins and other nutritional components from our daily food. Sure, I understand that not always it’s possible to take all the amount of vitamins we need from food, especially vitamin B in complex, which is so hard to be found. Lately though I have suffered from a severe form of allergy and the doctor told me to take some B-complex multi-vitamin. Thorne Research B-Complex sound like the perfect choice in this case.

      Leo, I totally understand that. At the same time though I absolutely do believe that proper supplementation is critical, if you want to have that optimal (best kind possible) health. Way too many people undervalue this.

      Yet, don’t get me wrong, I am not of the opinion that supplements can replace proper food. I also do prefer and HEAVILY rely on healthy food and I absolutely do believe that it’s irreplaceable. However, in modern day and age so are also supplements. This is essentially one of the reasons why I started this website in the first place.

      Thus, I’m a huge advocate for eating the right stuff and having extra nutrients on top of that (essentially complimenting the diet) with the right kind of high quality proper supplements that will only boost this experience called life.

      To add to that I’m also a huge advocate for exercising regularly, doing a mindfulness practice regularly and having good night sleep as all of them play huge, huge, huge part in our overall well-being and health!

      I’m glad I had the opportunity to help you with that allergy of yours. I truly hope that it will make things better for you!

    I have taken B12 on occasion, when suffering from extreme exhaustion. After reading your article, I rushed off to check what kind I have in my cupboard! It turns out I have the ‘methylcobalamin’ form of B12, which is recommended right? Mine is in wafer form, which is supposed to be dissolved on the tongue or under the tongue for absorption. It’s quite expensive and I have rationed it out only for my extremely tired times. Probably explains why I still have some, as I have not used it in a very long time. What do you think about the wafer form? Would you buy them? Mine are by Jamieson.

      Yes, Madeleine, Methylcobalamin is the B12 vitamin form that you want. 🙂

      The B12 by Jamieson is a solid one, you can definitely stick to it, if you choose to. No doubt, you can also jump to any other B12 supplement on this list. In my opinion, it really doesn’t matter that much in which type of form it’s delivered as long as it does not involve harmful additives, be it wafer form or any other.

      So, to answer your question, would I buy it? Probably not as I do believe there are better options for B12 out there, hence this list. But it’s definitely not something I would be an advocate for avoiding, as it does provide solid amounts of B12 without harmless additives in it, Madeleine. 🙂

    Great Post! I have recently adopted a plant based diet (for health reasons) and have come across this problem. Apparently humans get B12 from animals or dairy on most part so it is possible for some vegetarians (the dairy eating type of them) to get it from their food but vegans definitely need this and I suspect that a lot of meat eaters also have trouble absorbing it in any case.

    I like the vegansafe B12 or the Thorne Research one. I think it is important to get the right amount of b12 considering it’s importance to daily and overall function. I believe it is also responsible for nerve maintenance if I am not mistaken and that sounds pretty important right?

      Well, it definitely should be enough to get by for those vegetarian type of dairy eaters as dairy should be able to provide you with enough B12 to not get sick or encounter B12 deficiency disease at least short-term wise. But to be honest dairy isn’t the most abundant resource of B12 vitamin, so for that, the only two meaningful B12 vitamin sources out there are beef liver and clams.

      Yeah, in this regard I similarly suspect that it’s impossible for vegans to have enough B12 even to just get by. Supposedly though they could get by, with just their diet, if it’s heavily focused on food that is grown on proper and rich soil. Which I would say 99% of the time is not possible. So, the supplementation is crucial not just in terms of not acquiring a deficiency disease, but even more so in terms of speaking about optimal cognitive performance.

      Yes, and as for meat eaters, it totally is the case.

      There are a lot of things B12 is responsible for, it definitely is in part responsible for proper nerve function. Ultimately, in my opinion it’s one of the absolutely most important vitamins to have.

    This is the most comprehensive list for vitamin B12 that I have come across and it was a pleasure reading it, although it took me almost a half hour just to get through it. I also had to read the PDV page, but it was worth it.

    I liked your comment about organic sugar in – No. 12 |  Nature’s Plus Source of Life Garden Organic Vitamin B12  – to me sugar is sugar, organic or not and is a garbage filler providing zero nutrients.

    I liked this one the best because it is the cheapest – No. 13 | Doctor’s Best Fully Active B12 (1500 mcg).

    I did not like the chewable because there is too much sugar in it – No. 16 | Bluebonnet Nutrition EarthSweet Chewables Methylcobalamin.

    I did not like this because of organic raspberry flavoring? – No. 17 | Go Nutrients Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin).

    Lactose is a milk sugar broken down into glucose and galactose – No. 18 | Natural Factors B12 Methylcobalamin

    Good things are your discounts on the iHerbs links and your recommendation on how to take the vitamins which I will start doing.  

    This was a great post about vitamin B12, like a mini book, many references and citations and I thank you for writing it.

    Side note, in your reference # 103 The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes, read this book if you have not, it is excellent. 

    I have not read Dr. Mark Hyman’s book but will find it on Amazon and pick it up.

    What an informative article on B12! Methylcobalamin​ is the kind I take. I became vegan after studying at Hippocrates Health Institute where I learned that B12 is actually a soil organism. When farmers raised their crops and sold them, we got a lot of our B12 this way, from the soil. Meat eaters think they’re getting enough but the truth is that the B12 in meat is not the most bioavailable and most of us absolutely need to supplement our B12. You can do a spectracell analysis to see, at a cellular level, what you are deficient in. 🙂 Thanks for the fabulous information!

    Wow I love point four. Supplement manufacturing and the quality should indeed be labeled. Do you know if their are international standards on it? I agree to you in most. Indeed there should be some other supplements this would only increase health benefits. The tests done by Thorne research are highly needed. Each supplement should be tested for any deviations from the supplements main purpose. I am a personal fan of security.

    I will order one of these from Iherb. International shipping. In my country Norway I rarely see supplements of Vitamin B12 anywhere.

      To my knowledge there are no international standards other than the IFOS, which is specifically designed for Fish Oil. Other than that there are, however, powerful national standards like the NSF, USP, TGA, of course also the cGMP is a standard, I’m very sure that there are others that I’m not aware of or that just do not come to mind right now. There might even be some present in your home country. Ask around locally. 🙂

    I am a vegan so finding good quality B12 supplements is sometimes such a slog. B12 definitely helps with my mental clarity, energy levels, and overall feeling of wellness. I do prefer the drops, but I am now open to trying the sprays thanks to your recommendations. Never liked taking tablets though, even if they are good for you!

    However, is it possible to have this kind of research for Vitamin B12 found in foods as a comparison in your review?

      Such a brilliant question! 🙂 And I totally get that, there’s much controversy around supplements and the need for them in general.
      And I was completely aware of it before I started this website.

      Supplement Alliance is not about pitching you supplements as the best option to improve health, as a fast fix if you will.
      Supplements do not work that way. Essentially you should see them as stuff that compliments your health, in fact without the other factors of great health it won’t happen.

      Sure supplements can have some incremental benefits nonetheless but that is not the point.
      Supplement Alliance is to expose and provide guidance in this area, so that you would be confident in your choices. Cause there are supplements that won’t provide benefit and a lot of times will even in truth worsen your health.

      If you believe that only food is absolutely enough to provide you with all the nutrients you need to be as healthy and mentally focused, sharp and aware as you can possibly be, then great. (Supplements aren’t for you.)

      But I do not believe that. And there are many, many doctors, experts, scientists, and health enthusiasts, and researches, and science papers, and studies, who/which do not believe it either. And a whole science and a branch of medicine called Functional medicine, do not believe it either.

      I am not here to convince anyone that my approach and what I believe in is the right one. I’m here to help and guide people that believe what I believe in, as well as for everyone else, who are open minded about learning and improving one’s health.

      In this sense there is no Supplemental Alliance. As implied already I am not here to promote that supplements is that magical ingredient that everyone has been missing and that will give the best health possible automatically and without effort.

      Awesome health is an entirety of many factors, proper nutrition just being one of them.

    Today I was speaking to my mother about slow intestines (like they say about mine) and she told me I might need this. This was what I really needed information about. I am really young and need to start taking care of my body; seriously.

      From what I know, I believe there is no correlation between B12 vitamin and improving gut health. The vitamin is highly reliant on the health of your gut, which, if is not taken care of properly, may result in poor absorption of the vitamin. And that may lead to malabsorption of the vitamin, which can lead to a deficiency and many types of seriously unpleasant conditions.

      Nonetheless, B12 is not limited to any type of people. Literally everyone can benefit from it.

      I can totally agree that many young and also not so young people do not care for their health enough consuming junk food like crazy and literally lacking any sorts of healthy habits.

      All in all though, there are a lot of misconceptions about aging being responsible for many chronic diseases, however, that is not true at all. While aging itself is a natural process (everything ages), any kinds of negative health effects associated with it can be completely avoided, if habits essential for our health are practiced regularly.

      My own story did inspire me as I do feel that proper vitamins were the turning point for my better health when I was struggling so much. But most importantly my inspiration comes from other people’s stories that have been able to cure themselves from impossible and deemed as untreatable conditions with the help of proper vitamins and food. Of course also other aspects of health must be taken into account, and so I truly aspire to everything of that.

      I am on a personal mission that I do feel I will continue for as long as I live. It would definitely help to make it as a career when it will be possible, so that I could provide even more information and put out articles at a higher rate. I would truly love that.

    I have had issues with vitamin B12 in what is over the past few years, I’ve had a chronic deficiency and have had to go in for regular B12 shots at the doctor’s. We top up, check the levels and then I go for several months to half a year without any shots. Then we check and start the process all over again. Do you think in my case, the oral supplements would be effective? I’m particularly interested in the Thorne Research supplement.

      Thank you for sharing that, I truly appreciate it! Yes, shots are often times the number choice in cases of deficiency. Mostly because they bypass gut, and one’s actual gut health does not matter in acquiring the vitamin.

      For the oral supplements in regards to the B12, the gut health as I already pointed out in the article is extremely important. So, the essential that needs to be addressed is whether your gut health is on top of it’s game or not. Chances are that it’s not, if you’ve been diagnosed B12 deficient. However, pretty much just as likely is the fact that you’re simply eating way too little amounts of animal kingdom’s products, so the body is not able to get even the minimal amounts needed for not developing a disease.

      If the case is that you simply don’t have enough in your daily diet, using an oral supplement will definitely help a lot and get you off those shots. However, if your gut health is severely impaired, the best approach would be to first improve your gut’s health with to the very least proper food and a probiotic supplement. And only then you could actually benefit from oral supplements and get off the shots.

      However, do keep in mind that in the case of the inflamed gut health, the problem is much deeper as you could be slowly developing deficiencies also in regards to other nutrients. In this regard, I would strongly advise to seek a doctor of functional medicine that can help you sort this out.

    Thank you for such a long but educative post about the best vitamins B12 supplements. I am completely certain that our bodies needs vitamins, minerals and all the other good stuff to stay strong and healthy. 

    I have to admit that I didn’t know much about B12 vitamins before, but with this post I feel like I could actually give a lecture on them. A very educational post, indeed. 

    All in all B12 is something that I’m going to add to my daily vitamins as I have been taking vitamins in general, but haven’t been aware of the B12. 

    Can kids take vitamins B12?

      Kids can definitely take B12, it will only be beneficial. As to the amounts, obviously they don't need as much as adults, so it would essentially be best to either give them like one capsule every week of a supplement that provides 500 mg of B12.
      But do take in mind this is largely a speculation of mine, I haven't yet found the time to actually research how the necessary amounts of vitamins differ for kids (cause they definitely do differ). I will do that in future, so be sure to check back, if that is a topic that interests you.

    Wow! As a father of two small children, this is really helpful. I was aware of the benefits of the common vitamins like B, C & D but not of B12. I like how you divided the whole topic into chapters and I didnt have to read the ones that werent applicable to me.

    I also want to say thanks for doing a vegetarian sections as I have recently become a vegetarian and this saves me time and money from buying man-made products.

    I live in Dubai and some of the brands I havent heard off. I will have to speak to my pharmacologist about them.

      Yes, I can only reiterate as the manufacturing processes are extremely important. These processes in regards to supplements have a in a sense an unwritten regulation in the industry by the best brands out there. If I’m not mistaken, as for actual laws on this there essentially aren’t any as supplements are considered as food both in U.S. and in Europe.
      However, many brands see it as their utmost priority to get certified and to essentially prove that they are as tested and as safe without contaminants and accurate as regards to the labels as the medicine is. Even exceeding the standards set for medicine.

    Wow! What an extensive detailed article about B12! I learned a lot from this article and I will be coming back to your site for my next purchase of B12.
    It is a supplement that people seem to know on one level they need, but for the most part probably don’t purchase and instead buy a B complex supplement which I imagine does not have enough B12 in it. I do feel that it is important to experiment with different brands of supplements because our bodies may not agree with it over another brand. Everyone’s body is different and we all metabolise ingredients differently. There are some brands I just know that my body does not want, despite knowing I would benefit from the actual vitamin. So, it is great that you provided a big list of options here. Thanks for your research!

      I completely and totally agree with you as for our bodies all being different. I couldn’t agree with you more on that point.
      As for the various brands, I have not observed this as regards to myself, but I imagine it could be somewhat true, probably mostly because of some manufacturing practices employed in making of the supplement.
      Or if your not taking into account additives, that also would explain everything, in that case I would completely agree.

      And, yes, vitamin B complexes usually contain around 100-200 mcg of vitamin B12, which is still better than none, but way less than that preferred 1000 mcg. Mcg stands for micro-grams.

    With so many supplements on the shelves today it is quite overwhelming to choose which are the best ones to take.   It is scary to think that the manufacturing process can create undesirables that can be taxing on your body long term.

    I live in South Africa so I have never heard of the brands that you talk about, but I like the look of the Thorne Research B Complex. I never realized that one needs so much B12 in your diet, so vegans must battle with this most of time, but this one seems to give you all the Bs with an extra dose of B12.

      Nature’s Bounty B-12 is something that I remember reviewing during the research process. The problem I found with it was that it contained the vitamin B12 form of Cyanocobalamin. Although this form is still much better to use than no B12 supplement at all, I did found that Methylcobalamin is the superior form, so one should rather go with that.
      From an additive standpoint the Nature’s Bounty B-12 should not be harmful, so all in all it’s also completely fine to opt for that one, if you choose so or have so in the past.

    Whoa, what an article! A lot of research for this article for sure, and I can tell you look at things from the homeopathic/alternative medicine point of view. It wouldn’t make sense to me to take supplements for better health and be the biggest junk food eater or not eat any fruits and veggies at all. My husband is almost like that, he takes a handful of supplements but then on some days I pull my hair out when I see what he eats. When I mention it to him, he just brushes it off, so I quit saying anything to him.
    I just flew over the first half of the article because all the detailed nutrional/chemical information was a bit too confusing for me. I concentrated on the last half with the review of the different brands of B12 supplements available. I am glad that Bluebonnet is on the top list because I used to buy this brand in my health food store. That’s were I usually buy my vitamins because I trust their quality. I don’t trust the brands that Walmart sells …. After this article, I definitely have to start taking B12 again!

      Yes, I’m a huge believer in functional medicine, ketosis and micro-biome. That is also why the ideas I share are mostly grounded in those.

      And I can totally relate to you. I also have relatives that are essentially impossible to revert to better food choices. You can show them the studies, books, science papers, whatever, they just stick with their old food habits and don’t give a damn.
      Essentially, I do believe that it’s necessary to help people so to say be exposed to the information they need to know, but after that it’s totally up for them, if they choose to implement it in their own lives or not.     Hi! First of all, I would like to congratulate you for such an excellent article.
    I used to take supplements in the past, more specifically, Vitamin C, D, K2 and Krill Oil. However, I started researching online and discovered all the research don’t guarantee that the supplement will be beneficial. Some studies even suggest a negative effect on supplementation. My father used to take many types of “natural” supplements and have recently diagnosed with Thyroid, so the doctor said that might be the result of improper supplementation. What is your opinion about that? Do you think people (without serious deficiency) should take supplements like the B12 or just focus on a healthy diet?

      I’m absolutely thrilled about the questions you asked.

      There are a lot of studies out there that suggest that supplementation is completely unnecessary and can be in fact dangerous. And there are even more articles in the media that employ these kinds of studies and try to create a sensation and a big deal around it to attract readers.

      However. What they don’t tell you is that there are also studies that actually prove profoundly that supplements not only improve, but are also absolutely crucial for great health.

      There is a common trend in all of these studies that fully explain, why the huge difference is there. It’s way too much to cover in a single comment, however, I have done an article on this in the past, if you’re interested you can check it out here.

      So, to answer your question, yes, I’m absolutely certain that supplementation is crucial, if you want your body and your mind to be able to work at their most capacity. Surely, nutrition isn’t everything, eating the right foods, regularly exercising, have good sleep and practicing mindfulness are all aspects of health that play a huge role in our well-being.

      As for the vitamin B12 in our diets, there are only two potent sources of it – clams and liver. And many people don’t eat those. And even if you would, you would have to eat lots of both every day to acquire the amounts that you need for optimal health. Therefore, I fairly confident that vitamin B12 supplement is an essential part of your well-being.

      There is no doubt that supplementation can backfire, if one uses it recklessly. I’m not implying that your father did. But in general the very thing that makes you healthier can also make you incredibly sick, if you abuse it.

      As for the Thyroid it’s extremely unfortunate, however, I do believe it’s reversible. So, seek out specialist in functional medicine to help your father with that.
      But either way as I mentioned earlier health is an entirely of many factors. Whenever, they’re out of balance is usually when the bad health outcomes happen. So, surely one can blame it on supplementation entirely, but in reality it’s more often than not a combination of things, in which as in this case supplementation could or could not have played a role.

    Personally, I have to be careful of the supplements I take due to the fact that it can’t contain any estrogen, whether animal or plant form. So reading labels is important to me. I didn’t see anything like that here, but sometimes the “healthy” plants or herbs added contain estrogen.
    I have a friend who started taking a supplement to improve her overall health and even though she’s been post-menopausal for 10 years, she started menstruating after only 5 days. She found out one of the plant additives contained estrogen.
    So I appreciate your research here. It really helps people like me.

      If I’m not mistaken, quite many plants contain some amounts of estrogen. So, if estrogen is something you’re avoiding, just as a precaution don’t go for B12 supplements that have additional beneficial substances to them.
      Go for the “clean” ones (ones that provide only B12). But probably still safest to go with the Thorne Research Methylcobalamin. 🙂

      As for your friend that’s really unfortunate. I had no idea there were people who are so sensitive to the estrogen.

    Great article about Vitamin B12 supplements. This is very thorough and I like how you explained the type of vitamin B12. I just have one question, is overdose a possibility to this vitamin? I’m quite worried about drinking vitamins not since, I saw cases of a Vitamin A overdose. It is not really good as it did a considerable liver damage.

    I really like to try out vitamin B12 though, I know it helps in anemic patients. I would like to try it out soon.

      As for the overdose – I’ve heard of studies that it actually is possible. But as far as I know that only concerns B12 through injections – no such thing for the tablet, capsule, pill forms.
      Nonetheless, I believe that 5000 mcg is the absolute maximum you should ever be taking daily. But I would highly advise to be it even less than that. Essentially any option I have here on the list is completely safe to take daily – I’m very confident that one won’t be able to overdose like this.

      I totally get you, Jason, I’ve also seen severe vitamin A overdose cases. Yes, liver damage is what vitamin A does, if overdosed.
      But there is a crucial difference, why it’s much more easier to overdose vitamins like the vitamin A.

      You see, all vitamins divide up into two groups. There are water soluble vitamins, which are all the B vitamins and vitamin C. And then there are fat soluble vitamins, like the vitamin A, D, E, K. And in that both of those groups have very different mechanisms how they can combat excessive amount of those particular vitamins.

      As for water soluble ones, it’s no problem – they just get excreted through urine. As for fat soluble vitamins, it’s not that simple. Essentially, the body has very limited abilities when it comes to excreting excessive amount of those.

      Therefore, it’s much, much easier to overdose on fat soluble vitamins than on water soluble ones.

      If you’re still not sure, just try going with something that doesn’t offer 1000 mcg of B12, but instead 500 mcg. Something like, for example, the MegaFood Methyl B12. Try it out, and then just go from there.

    We use Thorne Research Methylcobalamin for our B12 supplements. I think Thorne is a great brand and we use them for all sorts of other supplements as well. IHerb is great for us as we live in Hong Kong and they ship there for free.

    Wow, I had no idea that B12 supplements were so varied and applicable to so many needs! I’ve personally felt like my gut could use some work, but I’ve rarely achieved great results getting back to a slimmer size in most cases. You are absolutely right about staying away from junk foods, bad oils and high fructose corn syrup! They really do make you bigger and less healthy.

    Thanks so much for this I love it!! My wife and I started a whole food plant-based diet last year after watching a couple of documentaries and reading the china study.

    It’s pretty frightening how much research is out there about food and how little people know about it (I’m not sure if you have researched much into it?)

    We take supplements (I heard someone calling it complementing your diet, rather than supplementing, which I quite liked!) but I had NO idea there were so many and how different they can be!!

    We actually currently have some fizz sticks from Arbonne that you just add water to and drink and they taste pretty nice (they do have some added sweeteners in though, which we aren’t a fan of, but they do taste good and adds some B12 in!)

    I love how knowledgeable you are on vitamin B12!

    I personally use a B12 complex (that you have not listed) and I really enjoy the effects it has on me. I always feel a lot better about myself when I have it. I do not take it every day and tend to rely on the complex more when I am having a bad day – or feeling extra moody.

    I have a few people that i know that suffer from B-12 deficiency and they go to the doctors for injections, the doctors say that it is the only way they can have it into their system. I have always been sceptical about this because if it I being digested or injected into the arm I really do not see the difference, I do not trust doctors anyway, medication kills us ultimately, it may treat one thing but it also destroys another. The money is not in the cure as they say.

      There is a reason, why they claim that it’s the only way for those people to acquire the B12.

      You see, vitamin B12 absorption is directly affected by your gut health. All vitamins, minerals and other beneficial substances are. However, the absorption of vitamin B12 is way more sensitive in this regard.

      Thus, if you mess up your gut health really bad, your body won’t absorb any or will absorb only insignificant amounts of the vitamin. Then essentially taking the best kinds of vitamin B12 supplements will be completely and utterly useless. It won’t provide any benefit whatsoever.

      Ultimately, there just seems to be no other way, how you can effectively consume the B12 vitamin. So, doctors of traditional medicine (the ones you refer to) will prescribe for you injections and leave you be. Because now they’ve made so that you absorb the B12 vitamin. But the gut health, well they won’t bother with that, because it wasn’t the problem, because you were not absorbing B12, and there were no problems with your gut health. But in truth there were those. This is such a typical scenario. You’ll be surprised how common this is.

      Essentially the approach of traditional medicine is only concerned with curing the symptoms and not actually addressing the root problems. As in this case, they didn’t ask, why the B12 is not absorbing. They only asked, how can I get it to absorb. So, in essence they didn’t address the real problem, but rather put a bandage on it.

      The way of functional medicine is, however, much, much, much different. They are always asking the ‘why’. They never care with just curing the symptoms. And in that they always look for and address the root problem and cause (in this case it would be gut health).

      So, in essence, if you go to a traditional doctor, because you’re not absorbing B12, he will prescribe you injections. But if you would go to a doctor of functional medicine, he would instead prescribe you probiotics (micro-organisms for improving gut health that positively affects your micro-biome and in that also your well-being) and advise you to cut back on processed foods.

      This is also the main reason, why when you go to a traditional doctor with, for example, dementia, he says that it’s incurable and nothing can be done. But when you take the effort to visit a doctor of functional medicine, he somehow miraculously cures it. Only it’s not a miracle.

      With functional medicine people have came back from the absolute worst illnesses, like the already mentioned dementia, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and any other possible disease you can think of. And not only did they come back, they were cured completely. Of course, there are instances where the illness has been left untreated properly for too long and you can’t on all 100% cure a person. And, yes, there are instances when it’s too late altogether.

      To explore another avenue – the conclusion you’ve drawn is not incorrect. I’m talking about the one that “medication kills us ultimately’. But why it’s a correct one? Why that is?
      How I see it, there are two major reasons, why such conclusion can be drawn.

      First, is the obvious one – extremely strong medication. The problem with this is that it usually addresses one problem, but disregards the rest of the organism. So, because of the doses, you might see improvements in regards to the primary problem, but you at the same time you see other systems starting to fail.
      Then there’s also the fact that this kind medication usually employs hard core additives that also take their toll on the whole organism.

      And secondly, is the bandage thing. As I already mentioned, traditional medicine is only concerned with curing the symptoms. Essentially it’s like, if you were to cut your leg really bad or get bitten by a stray animal, you’d just pop a painkiller and it’s all good. No more pain, all good.

      For a while that is. Then you need another dose. And then another, and another. After a while you find yourself living on painkillers.

      And then after a while you seem to have problems walking. So, you go to a doctor. He gives you a physical and concludes that your leg has been starting to rot. And then you’re surprised as to how this happened.

      Similarly it will be with those shots of B12 in regards to the people you know. If nothing is changed that is. Those shots will help them for a while. And then they’ll start having other problems. And all of those will be stemmed from the miserable gut health they probably have. Which ultimately will start to create more and more problems.

      It’s like a never ending loop. The crucial thing to understand is that everything in our bodies works in conjunction. If one system starts to have problems, other systems can suffer because of it and show symptoms.

      However, traditional medicine is not all bad. When it comes to bone fractures, surgeries and all the other stuff that is not directly associated with curing diseases, traditional medicine is the best we have.

      To finish off, if you can, please suggest to the people you know, who are taking B12 shots, to seek a specialist of functional medicine. If they’ll manage to find a professional of that kind skilled enough, I guarantee that he or she will get them off those shots.

    I use to take plenty of vitamins in my teenage years and early twenties. I was so healthy I’d even copy Rocky and crack open some eggs and drink a whole pint full raw! I coulda killed myself lol – the young is an amazing thing, I’d do that now and I bet I’d be very very sick. The best Vitamin I ever took was Vitamin B12 .Why? It helps with anxiety. It also helps you not to have nightmares if you take it 20 minutes or 30 minutes before bed time. I guarantee you, you will sleep like a baby. No more sleeping pills – this vitamin will naturally help you sleep very well indeed.

    I am glad there is someone like you Matiss showing others the value of this B12 vitamin. Unfortunately, I got out of the habit of taking it. I need to get some them because they are also very good for something else. Those that undergo counseling, will obviously notice much emotion reactions to the sessions.

    Taking one B12 20 minutes before the session will help with all that and you won’t feel so upset going in or coming out. Also, because sessions kick up emotional residue from the past, the vitamin does ‘something’ so that emotional residue does not impinge on you in the present after counseling.

      Yeah, I totally agree with you, B12 is truly an amazing vitamin. In my opinion it’s one of the most important vitamins out there and so underrated. At the same time it’s one of the hardest to attain from food.

      There are only two meaningful resources of it – clams and beef liver. If you’re not eating one of those regularly, it’s pretty safe to say that you have way, way less than is needed for optimal (the best kind of) cognitive (brain) performance.
      And even if you are eating those two regularly, it’s still impossible to achieve the amounts that are needed for best brain performance.

      To sum it up – essentially, by not having a proper amount of vitamin B12 one is steeling from his/her own awesomeness!

    I must say that you really did your research on vitamin B12! I have to admit that I’m undecided as to which one I would take. I wasn’t aware that different B12’s offered different benefits. I have one or two picked out that I would try. Honestly, I am taking B12 now because I have neuropathy and many folks may not know that a deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause neuropathy! Which one would you say is most beneficial for neuropathy?

      And your honesty, Rob, is sincerely appreciated.

      For neuropathy, well it depends. If you’re looking for just a proper B12 supplement, your best bet would definitely be the Vegansafe B-12. As I already mentioned in the article this supplement offers both bioavailable forms, essentially the best forms of B12 vitamin. On top of that the amounts it has and provides with are pretty relevant to treat a deficiency disease, which neuropathy is.

      And ultimately, when you manage to cure it, even if you wouldn’t be completely aware of it, it will not go to the other extreme of having too much. That’s what the science states.

      On the other hand, if you’re looking more for a supplement that could help combat neuropathy in general, I would go with Thorne Research B-Complex #12.
      This is because the Thorne supplement provides all of the three B vitamins – B1, B6, B12 – that from what I’ve heard are advisable when combating this condition. In theory you could experiment with double dose (2 capsules a day) for short periods of time, but I wouldn’t recommend to get carried away and go overboard with this approach.

      Note that I previously didn’t say ‘if’, I said ‘when’. This is because I strongly believe that with the right nutrition and approach you can get rid of neuropathy in no time. People have came back from much, much worse conditions than this one. All that it truly requires is a proper diet, proper nutrition (supplements), proper sleep, meditation (mindfulness), daily exercise and a belief. Sometimes practicing only the first two (proper food and nutrition) will be enough, other times all of them will be needed.
      In this regard I would highly recommend to seek out highly educated functional medicine specialists and doctors.

      Nothings permanent or untreatable! And that is even if your doctor of traditional medicine have said otherwise.
      The ultimate truth is that our bodies have an incredible abilities of healing, truly, truly incredible capabilities.
      All that it really takes are the right kinds and enough of building blocks as well as activation of all the right systems within ourselves.
      Belief, exercise, sleep, meditation, food and nutrition! And you can be who you want to be.

      As for the question. Well, there are all kinds of opinions and ideas out there as to what is arguably the best form of supplements. But arguing on that in my opinion is to completely miss the point.

      I do strongly believe that it does not matter that much. At the very end it all comes down to what kind of additives have been used in the supplement and in what forms are any particular nutrient present in the supplement. That’s the crucial part.

      Of course, preference plays a huge role as various people do much rather prefer certain supplement forms disregarding the rest. And that is completely fine as long as the nutrient forms are bioavailable and the additives does not harm you or worsen the absorption of nutrients.

    Wow I did not know the 100% DV is only just enough to prevent disease, seems logical now to put in there. I take multivitamins daily along with electrolytes, and calcium supplements. I can say that it’s definitely worth every cent to buy top quality for B12 or any vitamins you buy for that matter.
    I have to say you got quite a lengthy and such an informative post on b12, thanks for sharing this knowledge with the world! I’m gonna be on the look out for b12, I love taking vitamins, I know it’s a huge problem in this country of people getting proper nutrients in their food.

      I can definitely agree, various nutrient deficiencies are such an epidemic pretty much world-wide. Now more than ever people are suffering from all these kinds of chronic diseases, such as dementia, cancer and many other, which are in essence a consequence of nutrient deficiency gone worse.

      Furthermore, typical western type of diet consisting largely of processed foods does not promote good gut health, which in return worsens the nutrient absorption, which ultimately creates hardcore deep rooted deficiencies.
      And as I mentioned in the article, bad gut health can actually make any supplements or additional substances you’re taking useless, simply because your body won’t have the capacity to absorb them.

      And I totally agree with you, it’s always better to go for quality. Discrediting that and cutting corners in terms of your health, will at the end only be a huge detriment not only to your happiness, but also to your potential and success in and throughout life.

      It took quite some time. About a month to fully write the article and do all the research necessary, and that doesn’t account for any prior knowledge I already had in terms of supplements, health, well-being and nutrition in general.

      In my research I have found that Centrum supplements are actually very bad to take. They offer way too little amounts of vitamins and are filled with additives you should not rather consume. I’ve done reviews on Centrum Silver Men 50 Plus, Centrum Silver 50 Women 50 Plus and Centrum Performance. None of those I would recommend to anyone.

    I also come to know from this article that vitamin B12 breaks up into 3 supplements – Methylcobalamin, Cyanocobalamin, and Hydroxocobalamin.

    What a thorough review!

    I haven’t known too much about B12 supplements but I guess the MegaFood Methyl B12 and Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw B-12 are equally great! And, the reason for me is actually quite simple – if you consider yourself a vegan, it’s always a good idea to support products that are certified by Vegan Action. And, please forgive me to be superficial. Give me a product with more official certifications on it, I’ll put my trust in it, especially if they are health products.

    I haven’t really started to take any B12 supplements because I am not a vegan and I am trying to get the B12 from my diet. But I believe good supplements available on the market can help in transforming more people to become vegan, which is great! I think the next time when I consider if I should go vegan, I will be a lot more confident!

    Anyway, thanks for this thorough review of B12 supplements! I will recommend these products to my vegan friends and I’m pretty sure they’ll love this!

      It’s definitely way more manageable to go vegan nowadays that it was, lets say, a 100 years ago.
      However, I strongly believe that what you truly need in terms of B12 just from diet alone is not possible to acquire.

      What I mean is, it’s completely possible and manageable to get the amounts you need to not develop a deficiency disease. But if you truly want to be at your best, there is no way around this. You just can’t eat that much liver, fish or clams daily.

      Furthermore, vitamin B12 is extremely sensitive to bad gut health. So, if that is the case, that will diminish the absorbed vitamin B12 amounts significantly.

      Either way there is no better way to just try it out, lets say for 1-2 months and see for yourself. You don’t have to make any kind of commitment. If it doesn’t work for you, just let it go. But if it will, you may find new horizons of energy and possibility.

      All I’m saying is that this could potentially help you live a better and happier life. 🙂
      It certainly have helped me to do that. 🙂

      The complete honest truth is that you can get side-effects (or allergies) from anything that you either put in or on your body. This applies to food (also organic one), to pharmaceuticals, to creams and shampoos, to supplements and loads of other stuff. What can cause side-effects (or allergies) to someone, for someone else will be completely safe.

      As we all are different there is no 100% guarantee that a specific ingredient will not cause some type of unpleasant effect. However, there are ingredients that typically do not cause negative effects. These are the ones we all should strive for in our supplements.

      In this sense additives are in most cases the problem. And pharmaceuticals sin most in that regard.

    Hey Matiss!!

    This was a very comprehensive article! I myself take supplements everyday! I have also learned the importance of taking them! (Including B12)! I don’t know if you have ever heard of Dr. Wallach!

    He has a company called “Youngevity.” Basically he used to be a veterinarian and worked at zoo’s. One of his jobs though was to do autopsy reports on animals that died “of natural causes.” He however found out that many of the animals died of some type of disease that was caused by deficiency in a certain vitamin or mineral. He did autopsy’s on I think around 1700 different animals.

    With this data he was able to correlate it all with human disease and make a list of 90 essential vitamins and minerals the human body needs to live. He says most diseases that we have as humans are caused by a certain deficiency!

    He then gives a good example of this. If you feed your pet the right pet food, you almost never have to take it to the veterinarian because the food is engineered to have all the nutrients that animal needs! So he decided to create the same thing but for humans!

    Personal Experience:

    My dad really struggled with back pain his whole life and thought for sure by age 50 he would be crippled. Every year there were times when his back would spasm and he wouldn’t be able to move for hours. Then his legs started having pains, to the point where he couldn’t run anymore. Since his back hurt so much he couldn’t do other exercises.

    He went to tons of specialists, doctors, chiropractors and none of them could help him! They couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Well my dad stumbled upon Dr. Wallach and started listening to him. He then called the company up, told them what pains he was having and they told him to take these vitamins and minerals daily and how much he should have each day. They said if there wasn’t improvement in three months he could get his money back!

    Well after the first two weeks he was running again! For the first time in two years! Now 5 years later at age 50 he rarely has back pain and is in the best shape of his life!

    As a plant-eater, I have to be really on top of my B-12 supplementation. I was using Jarrow until recently. (Do you know much about them or where they would fit into this list?) I recently bought the Garden of Life MyKind Organics B-12 Organic Spray. I like that it’s a spray and it’s tasty, and I see it made your list, which is good to know! I’m always looking to find the best products. Is the Thorne Research B-12 not vegan? Do you know if it uses lanolin?

      I remember looking at Jarrow B12, 1000 micro-grams of Methylcobalamin it was, if I’m not mistaken.
      The problem with it was that it had Xylitol and natural lemon flavor. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, which although in terms of insulin levels is healthier than the typical table sugar, but one extremely likely side-effect to sugar alcohols are farts. Smelly farts. Excuse my directness, but it’s exactly that. I don’t have any other way how to put it. It can also possibly cause some other stomach related issues. Ultimately though, I do not believe in sugar, especially when it comes to supplements. So, I wouldn’t put it on this list, ever.

      As for the Thorne Research Methylcobalamin, it does not use Lanolin. It is, however, not considered vegan, if I remember correctly, because of the Leucine, which is one of it’s additives. It is, in fact, a beneficial additive. Yet, not vegan.

It seems like a good principle that can be extrapolated across other supplements and medicines as well.     I remember that I have taken B1+B6+B12 in past to help me with my muscle spasms as recommended by my parents but never really knew if the amounts where enough. I can’t remember how much B12 contents it had but good to know that I need 500-1000 micro-grams as you have mentioned.     You have really given me a lot to think about with all of this information that you have provided.
    As I am getting close to 50 I have noticed changes and I honestly do not like it. Less energy not sleeping good.
    When I worked at a physicians office we would administer B12 injections to quite a few of our elderly patients. Some of course had B12 deficiencies. Which is how I landed on your site. I wasn’t sure about the different supplements and what I should look for in them.

    Great info on the good ol’ cobalamin! In recent years I have radically lowered my intake of animal based foods, especially red meat and dairy and I’m very aware of the importance of B12 for your health. Vegans especially NEED to supplement with it or at least eat yeast extract to get adequate amounts from diet. Great research on the products btw, gotta check them out. One thing I would like you to mention – just in case – is that super dosing some B vitamins (not B12 that I know of) is potentially neurotoxic, so people should avoid chugging down huge amounts of B-multivitamins. Keep up the good work!

      I couldn’t agree with you more that vegans are truly the risk group of B12 deficiency.
      As for neurotoxicity – yes, I’m fully aware of it and I do take it into account in everything that I write about. For example, this was the main reason why I recommended people not to consume the full dose of Ultra Preventive X. Alternatively, I gave also other options, how one could work around it, if he/she wanted to try the full dose.

      As for B12 – there are no studies that show that vitamin B12 is toxic in any amounts. Well, at least I haven’t found any, and believe me when I say – I’ve looked.
      Nonetheless, I do not know everything – if you happen to come across any relevant studies, be sure to let me know! I would appreciate it a lot! 🙂

On this same note, sure, consuming the right kind of supplements will most probably and in most cases provide at least some benefit.

    This post is full of great information, I learned a lot about different types of B12 supplements. I had never noticed the difference before.
    Quick question – how about kids? Any special guidance for the little ones? I use a multivitamin gummies for them, but not sure it’s enough.

      As I finished my elaborate answer, my web connection crashed and I lost all of it. So, here we go again.

      First, I have to say that I truly appreciate your kind words.

      As regards to your question – I’m not judging or reprimanding you – but to be honest multivitamin gummies are the absolute worst possible option to go with. I would never, ever, even if my daughter cried and went berserk (I doubt it would go that far, but to make a point here) give her a gummy.
      Those gummies without exception are full of sugar and by far most of the time also soaking with other harmful additives (but mostly the sugar). This combination ultimately harms the child more than the gains from the tiny amounts of vitamins could ever benefit him/her.

      As for multivitamins – I would suggest getting a proper multivitamin and giving them no more than one or two capsules/tablets daily of that supplement. This of course will highly vary defending on the age of the child.

      At the same time, if a child refuses to take “normal” vitamins (ones that do not contain sugar), then it’s much, much, much better to just not give him/her anything. They’ll be better off that way than consuming gummies. Or in other words, essentially by giving your child gummies you are harming him/her instead of helping or improving his/her health.

      As for the carrots and fat – it totally makes sense. Carrots contain very abundantly a substance called beta-carotene.     I’ve never used any supplement before and I have heard about B12, so happy I stumbled on your site to have such information and I would like to try Vegansafe B-12 once it’s good to use every day and does not have third-party certification. I might revisit this article in the near future as I am willing to become a vegan.

      If you’re really new to supplements, I would recommend to read the article on Do We Need Vitamin Supplements? It will provide a better insight on why supplements are essential for truly great health. You can also take a peak into my story and how adding them to my diet really made a difference.

      Other than that, for supplements having a third party certification is a good thing. So, no need to avoid that. 🙂

To my surprise, out of your list I only knew Pure, which positioned themselves as delivering the highest quality of raw materials.     Very well researched, and thorough information on vitamin B-12. I really like how you explain, and provide the most bioavailable form methylcobalamin. I also appreciate how you list the various choices in supplements, and what some of the additives for these products are. B-12 is such an important vitamin, and yet so difficult to get from our food if one is vegan, or eats very little meat as I do. Thanks for sharing this. Tom
